From Our Farm to Your Plate: The Story of Our 15-Acre Organic Farm
A Farm With a Purpose
When we started Dandeli Chalet, we had a simple rule: no meal should travel more than a few hundred meters to reach your plate. Our 12-acre organic farm isn't just a feature we mention — it's the foundation of everything we serve.
No chemicals. No pesticides. No shortcuts. Just honest farming practices that have sustained these lands for generations.
What We Grow
Vegetables & Greens
From spinach and ridge gourd to drumstick and amaranth — our vegetable garden produces a rotating harvest that changes with the seasons. This means our menu changes too, and that's intentional. You eat what the earth is giving, not what a supply chain dictates.
Rice & Grains
We grow traditional rice varieties on the farm. There's something profoundly satisfying about eating rice that was growing in the field you can see from your cottage window.
Spices
Karnataka is famous for its spices, and our farm is no exception. Black pepper climbs our areca nut trees, cardamom grows in the shaded understory, and turmeric colors our curries with its deep golden hue.
Fruits
Jackfruit, mangoes, bananas, papayas, and coconuts — the tropical abundance is real. During fruit season, guests are welcome to pick directly from the trees.
Herbs
Fresh curry leaves, coriander, mint, and holy basil are harvested minutes before they enter the kitchen. You can taste the difference.
Our Farming Practices
No Chemical Inputs
We use only organic compost, cow dung manure, and green manure. Our soil is alive with earthworms and beneficial microorganisms — the way healthy soil should be.
Water Conservation
Rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, and mulching help us use water responsibly. In a region blessed with rainfall, we still believe in not wasting a drop.
Biodiversity
Our farm isn't a monoculture — it's a polyculture that mimics the diversity of the surrounding forest. Different crops grow together, supporting each other naturally. This reduces pest problems and enriches the soil.
Seed Saving
We save seeds from our best-performing plants each season, maintaining traditional varieties that are adapted to our specific microclimate.
The Kitchen Connection
Our kitchen team works directly with the farm. Each morning, the day's harvest is discussed, and the menu adapts accordingly. This farm-to-table connection means:
- Peak freshness — vegetables are picked hours before cooking
- Maximum nutrition — nutrients degrade with time and transport
- Zero food miles — our supply chain is a garden path
- Seasonal eating — the way nature intended
Farm Tours
Every guest is welcome to tour the farm during their stay. Our host will walk you through the different sections, explain our methods, and let you taste produce straight from the soil. Children especially love the experience of seeing where their food actually comes from.
The farm tour is complimentary for all staying guests and typically lasts 1-2 hours.
Why It Matters
In a world of packaged, processed, and transported food, eating a meal made entirely from ingredients grown a few steps away feels revolutionary. Our guests consistently rate the food as one of the top highlights of their stay.
It's not just about taste — although that's exceptional. It's about reconnecting with the source of our sustenance. It's about showing our children that food doesn't come from supermarkets. It's about supporting a way of life that's sustainable, honest, and deeply satisfying.
Want to taste the difference? Book your stay at Dandeli Chalet and experience farm-to-table dining in the heart of the forest.
